“Because when I'm in a room with you, that missing piece is found.”
Haylee and Trent were married on a hot day at K1 Winery. K1 was a stunning, picturesque location. The venue suited a wedding where you can have a vineyard-backed ceremony, then enjoy canapes in a leafy, lake-fringed garden, before finishing with a seated meal and al-fresco dance floor. We also rated it highly because we could drive our equipment right up to the dance floor. No stairs. Win!
Something we loved about Haylee and Trent’s wedding was how they injected their personality into the day. For example, as self-confessed enjoyers of games, they designed a scavenger hunt for guests. Haylee also instated a ‘2 minute rule’ for speeches, instructing us to play “Hit the Road Jack” if anyone went over time. We loved this creativity and have shared the speech cut-off idea with other couples. We must also give a shout-out to Haylee and Trent’s beloved pooch Ramsey who received many mentions during the speeches.
We also appreciated how Haylee and Trent broke the mould of wedding ‘have to’s’. For example, they wanted a brief first dance (20 seconds) before having guests join them for a group dance. Requests like this are easy to action. So if a traditional bridal waltz or first dance is not your preference, we can help ‘you do you’. We encourage couples to make the most of the occasion to showcase who they are and to enjoy themselves.
Before the dance floor kicked off at 9pm, we had 4 hours of music to fill. We matched the music to the context of what guests were doing. This can change from wedding to wedding, based on the venue, weather, style of food service and any other factor. We envision what will elevate guests’ experience and channel that into our song selections. For example, while guests lounged in the garden with canapes, we played downtempo, summer-y, soulful tunes such as “Breezin’” (George Benson), “Lucky Man” (Courtney John), and “Hercules” (Aaron Neville).
During dinner, we could play with more volume and musical energy than usual because we were outside. We worked our way from Sade’s “Cherry Pie” to Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”. Once guests had finished eating, there was an hour of mingling until the dance floor opened. We used this time to build up the energy, playing songs like INXS “Need You Tonight”, Michael Jackson’s “Baby Be Mine” and Boz Scaggs’ “Lowdown”.
Music-wise, Haylee and Trent wanted everyone of all ages to feel included. They asked for throwbacks and mainstream hits with inter-generational appeal. The dancefloor kicked off with Haylee and Trent’s requested songs: “Keep on Movin’” by 5ive and “What is Love?” by Haddaway. After that, we had two hours of power to fill and we made sure we played something from each era: 70s (“Love is in the Air”), 80s (“I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”), 90s (“Finally” by CeCe Peniston), 00s (“Murder on the Dancefloor”), and current (“Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa).
The night ended with Haylee and Trent exiting to Europe’s “The Final Countdown”.
Haylee and Trent said: “Nick and Ben were the perfect combination of easy-going and professional. Their upbeat personalities and ability to read the room made for a very fun and memorable night. We could not have asked for better DJ's for our wedding. Funk Bros’ were simply sublime. Thank you for everything!”
