Greg & Kelly's Wedding at Chateau Apollo

“My love must be a kind of blind love. I can't see anyone but you…”

It is particularly enjoyable to play for fellow record collectors and soul music enthusiasts. We are glad that Greg and Kelly chose us to soundtrack their wedding reception at Chateau Apollo (who, by the way, cooked up an absolute feast). We were pleased to play lots of Greg’s records on the night too, which added a personal touch.

Clients often ask us about our process for choosing which records to pack and which songs to DJ on the night. This involves getting to know our clients musical preferences and then searching through our music collection for what fits. For Greg and Kelly, this included an initial phone call to chat about music in general. Hearing that Greg was a fellow vinyl collector and keen on the soulful genres we enjoy gave us a helpful starting point for envisioning the musical vibe.

Greg had also booked a jazz band for part of the reception. We considered how we would segue in and out of the band’s performance in a musically appropriate way. Generally, we spend 5-10 hours preparing our music for events. Finding songs that flow well together, songs that have been requested and considering what else would mix well with these. We also pick songs which are commonly requested or well-received and any appropriate songs from our listening rotation.

Another highlight from Greg and Kelly’s wedding was the short musical quiz they designed. This contained 5 questions about songs which had soundtracked highlights of their relationship. We played snippets of each song and guests had to guess the artist and song name. Such a fun and memorable game!

Greg and Kelly then took to the floor for their first dance: I Only Have Eyes for You” by The Flamingos, segued into Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” by Stevie Wonder. Following this, we lead guests through a range of styles and moods, all informed by Greg and Kelly’s love of funk, soul, jazz and rock. Some of the ‘must play’ artists included Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, The Jackson 5, The Beatles, Queen, The Strokes, David Bowie, and Tame Impala.

At the end of the night, we ended up playing 3-4 Led Zeppelin songs back to back. Not something we planned, but it felt right at the time, based on guests' responses. A great example of the importance of good rapport between the bridal couple, guests and the DJs. Furthermore, Greg and Kelly hadn’t requested a specific ‘last song’ for the evening and had trusted us with this choice. Now, it’s worth pointing out here that DJ Benny G has become quite the ‘last song whisperer’. Often knowing what tune is needed to round out the night. “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen was the song on this occasion and it was a joy to witness the smiles and love between Greg and Kelly and their guests during the singalong.
